Mr. Wilson,
I am the communication director for Rutherford County Schools, and I have information you can use in regards to your questions.
Graduations are intended to be celebrations of honors earned from a high school while a student attended, and earlier this week, the Smyrna High School principal communicated this information to graduating seniors. There is a procedure in place giving principals discretion on graduation attire, but there is also a “Graduation Activities” policy allowing for students to be honored for voluntarily completing at least (10) hours of community service each semester the student is in attendance at a public high school.
The policy is ambiguous and as currently written, Eagle Scouts would probably qualify under the existing policy, and so our Director of Schools has advised all high school principals to allow Eagle Scouts to wear a cord during graduation. This information was communicated to all high school principals today. Over the summer, we will be reviewing this policy and the Director will request input from our high school principals to present to the Board. The goal will be to develop a consistent policy that can be used across all our high school graduations.
Our Director has asked the principal to inform any of her graduates who are Eagle Scouts and who wish to wear their cord.
